It’s a hard figure to pin down, but research suggests there are around 1.2 million husband- and-wife-owned small businesses nationwide. While some of these have grown into massive entities – Kate Spade, Clif Bars, Flickr – the majority of hot tub stores remain smaller endeavors. The long hours, blurred lines between home and work, and tense moments, however, exist regardless of size. Glenn Muske and Margaret Fitzgerald, professors at North Dakota State University, have spent 15 years studying American family-owned businesses and estimate 10 to 25 percent of domestic small businesses are owned by married couples.
